The root cause is almost always the same: a waterproofing step that was rushed, skipped, or done incorrectly. At MCS Custom Tile & Stone, we've built a 5-step installation process specifically to eliminate that risk on every job we touch.

Here's exactly what we do — and why each step matters.

Step 1: Substrate Preparation

Everything starts with the substrate. Before we set a single tile, we assess the surface for levelness, structural integrity, and moisture resistance. Concrete board is checked for proper fastening and seams. Existing surfaces are evaluated for compatibility.

A tile installation is only as good as what's underneath it. Skipping proper substrate prep is the fastest way to end up with cracked grout, loose tiles, or worse — a failed waterproofing membrane.

Step 2: Schluter KERDI Waterproofing Membrane

We use Schluter KERDI membrane on all wet areas. KERDI is the industry standard for shower waterproofing for a reason: it's a bonded waterproofing assembly that integrates directly with the tile setting material, eliminating the gap between the membrane and the tile where moisture can migrate.

Every seam, corner, and penetration is treated according to Schluter's installation specifications. This isn't a step we rush.

Step 3: Precision Tile Layout and Setting

Before the first tile goes down, we plan the layout. That means accounting for the full pattern, centering, cut placement, and any design elements like niches or accent strips.

Rushing the layout is how you end up with a sliver cut in the most visible corner of the shower, or a pattern that doesn't align across the floor and walls. We take the time to do it right before we start — because fixing it after is far more expensive.

Step 4: Grouting and Sealing

Grout selection matters. We use the right grout type and color for every application — sanded vs. unsanded, epoxy where appropriate — and we seal all natural stone and grout lines for long-term durability.

Proper grouting technique also matters: consistent joint width, full grout coverage, and proper curing time before the shower is put into service.

Step 5: Final Quality Inspection

Before we leave the job site, every installation is inspected against our quality checklist. We're looking at grout consistency, tile alignment, waterproofing integrity at all transitions, and the overall finish quality.

If something doesn't meet our standard, we fix it before we walk out the door — not after your client calls you six months later.
